Description
Pair of Royal Crown Derby Royal Antoinette Salad Plates English Bone China 20 cm – 8 in.
Royal Crown Derby’s Royal Antoinette pattern remains one of the company’s most recognizable and enduring floral designs, combining delicate pastel bouquets, soft star motifs, richly gilded borders, and elegant scalloped forms into a pattern that feels unmistakably English.
This pair of Royal Antoinette salad plates captures that balance beautifully. The design features finely detailed floral garlands suspended around the rim against a white ground scattered with pale grey star motifs. Raised gilded decoration and hand-applied 22-karat gold edging frame the composition, while the softly lobed “Royal” shape adds movement and refinement to the silhouette.
The pattern draws inspiration from late 18th-century decorative taste and reflects the romantic floral traditions long associated with English fine bone china. Royal Crown Derby introduced Royal Antoinette during the mid-20th century, and it quickly became one of the factory’s signature luxury tableware patterns.
These plates bear the red Royal Crown Derby backstamp used during the later 20th century and are marked as factory seconds. Despite that designation, they still present beautifully and retain the elegance that made Royal Antoinette so popular among collectors and formal table settings alike.
One plate shows a couple of small dark spots within the white porcelain body, as photographed. Aside from these minor imperfections, both plates remain in good condition overall with attractive color, strong gilding, and excellent display presence. They work well as replacement pieces for an existing Royal Antoinette service, but they are equally appealing as decorative cabinet pieces or elegant dessert and luncheon plates.
A Pattern That Became a Royal Crown Derby Classic
Royal Crown Derby has long been celebrated for its richly decorated English bone china, particularly its mastery of gilding and ornamental surface decoration. Royal Antoinette reflects that tradition through its intricate floral painting, luminous white bone china body, and carefully balanced use of gold.
Unlike the bold density of Imari decoration for which the factory is also famous, Royal Antoinette embraces a lighter and more romantic aesthetic. Open white space allows the floral garlands and gilt details to breathe across the surface, creating a pattern that feels graceful rather than heavily ornate.
The soft floral sprays, pastel palette, and repeating stars give the design a timeless quality that continues to fit comfortably within both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Condition

Marked as factory seconds. One plate shows a couple of small dark spots within the white porcelain body, visible in the photographs. Minor age-appropriate wear may be present consistent with gentle use and handling. The gilding remains visually attractive and the plates display very well.
