Description

Wedgwood Egyptian Jasperware Trinket Box Black Jasper & Terracotta Canopic Jar Decoration 1978

This Wedgwood Egyptian jasperware trinket box from 1978 combines matte black jasper with terracotta-colored relief decoration in one of the most recognizable color combinations from Wedgwood’s celebrated Egyptian Collection of the late 1970s.

The softly scalloped circular form is decorated with four lotus flower medallions surrounding a central canopic jar motif rendered in raised terracotta relief against the dense matte black surface. The contrast between the black jasper body and warm terracotta decoration gives the piece a strong sculptural quality while also echoing the appearance of ancient Egyptian stone carving and ceremonial objects.

Produced during the renewed international fascination with ancient Egypt following the Treasures of Tutankhamun exhibitions, Wedgwood created a sophisticated collection of Egyptian Revival decorative arts incorporating pharaonic symbolism, lotus motifs, scarabs, falcons, canopic imagery, and archaeological-inspired forms using jasperware and black basalt bodies.

The central canopic jar motif references the ceremonial vessels associated with Egyptian burial traditions, while the lotus flowers symbolize rebirth and renewal within ancient Egyptian iconography. Despite its compact size, the box carries the strong visual identity and refined restraint that made the Wedgwood Egyptian Collection especially distinctive.

Wedgwood Black Jasperware

Wedgwood black jasper is one of the company’s most historically important ceramic bodies, originally developed by Josiah Wedgwood during the 18th century. Its dense finish and unglazed surface give it an architectural and sculptural character that differs significantly from traditional glazed ceramics.

The addition of applied terracotta jasper relief decoration creates a dramatic visual contrast while also connecting the piece stylistically to neoclassical and archaeological design traditions that Wedgwood explored throughout its history.

The underside carries the impressed Wedgwood mark together with the date mark “78,” confirming production in 1978.

The collection is documented within the original Wedgwood Egyptian Collection brochure (1978), which outlines the materials, design themes, and structure of the series.

Condition

Good vintage condition with light age-related wear consistent with careful use and storage. The black jasper body and terracotta relief decoration remain well preserved with no major chips or cracks observed. Minor surface marks consistent with age may be present. Please review photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
