Description
Vintage 1974 Wedgwood Portland Blue Jasperware Plate – “The Infant Academy” 10.25″
The Artistry:
The central scene is a charming neoclassical masterpiece based on a 1782 painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds, the first President of the Royal Academy. It depicts a group of playful children (cherubs) imitating an art academy, with one young “artist” seated at an easel. This relief was originally modeled in 1789 by Wedgwood’s most famous craftsman, William Hackwood, making this 20th-century piece a direct tribute to the company’s 18th-century roots.
Condition & Provenance:
This plate is in excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. The white relief remains sharp and vivid against the velvet-matte blue stoneware. The reverse is clearly impressed with “Wedgwood Made in England” and the date code “74” (1974), alongside the potter’s tally mark “S3”, ensuring its authenticity and mid-70s heritage.
