Description
Aynsley 982 Pink Rose Swag Bread & Butter Plates Set of 3 Small Cake Plates England Antique
This set of three Aynsley 982 bread and butter plates offers a smaller-scale expression of one of Aynsley’s most refined early 20th-century patterns. Designed with a soft pink central well and a continuous garland of roses and foliage, these plates carry the same decorative language as larger service pieces while introducing a more intimate, versatile format.
The 982 pattern reflects a period when English porcelain emphasized balance and delicacy. The floral swag border, composed of finely detailed roses and small blossoms, encircles the plate with a sense of movement, while the pink enamel center provides warmth and contrast against the white porcelain body.
These smaller plates were traditionally used for bread and butter service but adapt easily to desserts, tea settings, or layered presentation alongside larger plates from the same pattern.
Form and Decoration
Each plate is shaped with softly contoured edges and subtle scalloping, giving structure without rigidity. The central pink ground is bordered by a fine gilt band, separating it from the surrounding floral decoration.
The rose garland is executed with precision and consistency, forming a continuous border that softens the geometry of the form. Gilding along the rim adds definition and reflects light, enhancing the overall composition without overpowering the floral detail.
At this scale, the design becomes more concentrated, emphasizing pattern over space and creating a refined visual rhythm across the set.
Condition
The plates are in good antique condition overall. There is light surface wear consistent with age and use, including minor marks within the pink enamel.
One plate shows a small dark inclusion within the glaze, consistent with original production rather than later damage. Gilding remains present with light wear. No chips or hairlines are observed.
As with hand-finished antique porcelain, slight variations in tone and finish are part of the manufacturing process.
Context and Pairing
These plates complement the larger Aynsley 982 square dessert plates and the demitasse cup and saucer set available separately, allowing for a cohesive and layered table or display arrangement. A combination of sizes creates a balanced and visually engaging presentation.
