Description

Demon Studio Tehran 1949 Watercolor – Persian Scholars Reading Newspaper – Mid 20th Century Original

An original watercolor from Demon Studio, Tehran, signed and dated 1949, depicting two Persian scholars seated together reading a newspaper titled “Iran.” The composition captures a quiet moment of shared attention, rendered with confident brushwork and a refined sense of character.

The interaction between the two figures—one reading, the other leaning in—creates a natural narrative that conveys conversation and engagement. The scene feels both intimate and observational, with careful attention given to posture, facial expression, and gesture.

A Narrative Multi-Figure Composition

Works featuring multiple figures are less common within the studio’s output and offer greater visual depth. Here, the relationship between the two men becomes the focal point, supported by a restrained background and a balanced palette of warm earth tones and soft blues.

The inclusion of the newspaper, marked “Iran,” anchors the scene in its cultural context while reinforcing the documentary quality of the work.

About Demon Studio, Tehran

Demon Studio was founded in the early 1940s by R. Arthur Hayrapetian and operated from GIV Passage on Naderi Avenue in Tehran, across from the Naderi Hotel. The studio became known for producing watercolor scenes depicting everyday Iranian life, including scholars, merchants, and street figures.

Works were created by a group of trained Armenian artists working in a consistent style and were typically signed “Demon” or “Demon Tehran.” These paintings were produced for both local patrons and international visitors and are now recognized as part of mid-20th century Tehran studio production.

Medium and Technique

This work is executed in watercolor on paper, a medium that allows for both precision and fluidity. The artist uses controlled washes alongside more defined brushwork to build form and expression, particularly in the faces and garments.

Subtle tonal variations and layering give depth without overworking the surface, preserving the immediacy characteristic of studio watercolors from this period. The paper shows the slight texture typical of mid-20th century works, supporting the pigments while allowing for nuanced color transitions.

As with other Demon Studio pieces, the painting is entirely hand-executed rather than printed or mechanically reproduced, making each example a unique original despite the studio setting.

Condition

The watercolor remains in good vintage condition with strong color retention. The paper shows light, even toning consistent with age, with no significant damage affecting the image.
