Description

Wedgwood Egyptian Collection Jasperware Lidded Box Primrose & Terracotta Sphinx Motif 1978

This Wedgwood Egyptian Collection jasperware lidded box presents a compact and deliberate interpretation of Egyptian symbolism through one of the most recognizable forms in the series. Executed in primrose jasper with terracotta relief, the lid centers on a winged sphinx framed by stylized floral elements, arranged with the same balance and restraint seen across the collection. The collection is documented within the original Wedgwood Egyptian Collection brochure (1978), which outlines the materials, design themes, and structure of the series.

The soft primrose ground defines the character of the piece. Unlike basalt examples in the same series, where gilt provides contrast, this jasperware version relies on the interplay between matte color and applied relief. Wedgwood forms the body in colored stoneware and applies the terracotta elements separately, allowing the surface to read as sculptural rather than reflective.

Form and Material

This piece uses classic jasperware construction. Wedgwood casts the body in colored stoneware, then applies the terracotta relief elements by hand. The surface remains matte, allowing the sculptural detail to define the object rather than reflective finish.

The box form itself is compact and architectural. Its low, squared profile gives it a grounded presence, while the lid becomes the primary decorative field. The interior remains clean and unadorned, emphasizing its function as a container for small personal objects.

Egyptian Symbolism

The sphinx sits at the center of the design, a figure that embodies both protection and knowledge. In Egyptian tradition, the sphinx often guards sacred spaces, positioned as a threshold figure between the known and the unknown. Its hybrid form—human head, lion’s body, and here winged—signals power, intelligence, and divine association.

The surrounding floral motifs soften the composition without diminishing its symbolism. They create rhythm across the surface while reinforcing the balance between structure and ornament that defines the collection.

Condition

The piece remains in very good vintage condition with no chips or cracks. Minor surface wear appears consistent with age and careful handling.

An original antique dealer’s label remains affixed to the interior. Rather than removing it, it has been left in place as part of the object’s provenance and history within the secondary market.
