Description
Persian Minakari Enamel Plate Turquoise Floral Medallion Isfahan Vintage c.1960s 7.125”
This Persian Minakari enamel plate offers a slightly larger and more expansive interpretation of mid-20th century Isfahan enamel work, distinguished by its broader turquoise field and layered floral composition. Hand-painted on copper and finished with enamel on both sides, the plate presents a richly structured surface anchored by a central medallion surrounded by radiating floral forms.
The design emphasizes a wider turquoise ground compared to smaller examples, creating a more open and luminous presentation while maintaining the density of traditional Persian ornament. Black and white sections interlock with the turquoise field, forming a rhythmic pattern that moves outward from the center. Fine detailing in red, white, and gold enhances the composition without overwhelming it, preserving clarity within complexity.
While closely related in style to other Minakari plates of the period, this example distinguishes itself through proportion and spacing. The larger scale allows the motifs to breathe slightly more, giving the overall surface a balanced and cohesive presence.
Form and Construction
The plate is formed in copper and coated in enamel on both front and reverse. The surface is gently sloped toward the center, supported by an integrated foot ring that elevates the plate approximately 0.25 inches (0.6 cm). The overall height reaches approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm), giving it a subtle dimensionality suitable for both tabletop and wall display.
A built-in metal loop is incorporated into the reverse, allowing for direct hanging. The reverse enamel presents natural tonal variation and areas of age-related patina, consistent with vintage Minakari production and use over time.
Decorative Program
The central medallion is surrounded by a complex floral arrangement that reflects the enduring Persian tradition of stylized botanical design. Although this example does not emphasize a single figural motif, the composition draws on the same visual language as gol-o-bolbol themes, where floral forms create a continuous ornamental field.
The turquoise ground remains the dominant visual element, reinforcing its cultural significance within Persian decorative arts as a color associated with protection and vitality. The gilded accents are applied with precision, outlining borders and select details while preserving the overall harmony of the design.
Collectors may note the subtle differences between this plate and smaller examples of similar style, particularly in the distribution of turquoise and the spacing of motifs, which together create a distinct visual character.
Condition
The plate is in good vintage condition. The enamel surface on the front remains intact, with the decoration and gilding well preserved. The reverse shows areas of discoloration and tonal variation consistent with age and the nature of enamel on copper. The hanging loop remains secure.
