Description
Wedgwood Egyptian Collection “Beloved of the Great Enchantress” Gold Basalt Plaque, 1978 — Limited Edition
A beautifully preserved and complete example from Wedgwood’s celebrated Egyptian Collection, this limited edition plaque titled “Beloved of the Great Enchantress” was issued in 1978 and produced in a strictly limited run of 3,000 pieces.
Executed in Wedgwood’s iconic black basalt, the plaque is adorned with a finely rendered 24K gold relief depicting a sacred scene from the golden shrine of Tutankhamun’s tomb. The young pharaoh is shown seated while Queen Ankhesenamun gently anoints him, surrounded by stylized hieroglyphic cartouches—an intimate and symbolic moment drawn directly from one of the most remarkable archaeological discoveries of the 20th century.
The contrast between the matte black basalt and the luminous gold detailing gives the piece a striking presence, reflecting Wedgwood’s long tradition of translating classical and historical subjects into refined decorative art.
The reverse is elegantly inscribed in gold with the title, historical reference, and edition limitation, along with the Wedgwood mark and date code for 1978.
This piece is documented within the original Wedgwood Egyptian Collection brochure (1978), which outlines the materials, design themes, and structure of the series.
Heritage and Context
Wedgwood’s Egyptian Collection emerged during a renewed global fascination with ancient Egypt, following major museum exhibitions of Tutankhamun’s treasures in the 1970s. Drawing on its 18th-century black basalt tradition, Wedgwood reinterpreted ancient motifs with precision and restraint, producing a series that remains distinctive within the company’s history.
This plaque captures that moment—where archaeology, design, and craftsmanship intersect.
Condition
The plaque is in excellent vintage condition, with no chips, cracks, or restoration observed. The gold decoration remains crisp and vibrant.
A particularly desirable feature of this example is its completeness. It is accompanied by:
- The original Wedgwood Egyptian Collection presentation box
- Original booklet / label
- Original plexiglass display stand
The box shows light, age-appropriate wear.
Collector’s Note
Complete examples from the Egyptian Collection—especially those retaining their original packaging and display elements—are increasingly scarce. The combination of limited production, historical subject matter, and Wedgwood’s distinctive basalt work makes this a refined and highly displayable collector’s piece.
