Description

Bohemian Amethyst Cut & Enameled Glass Decanter Persian Market Floral & Gilt 20th Century

This large Bohemian glass decanter represents a refined example of European crystal produced for the Persian market, combining traditional glassmaking techniques with decorative elements tailored to Middle Eastern aesthetic preferences. Executed in amethyst-toned glass with a subtle ruby hue, the surface is enriched with deep cut geometric patterns, hand-applied enamel decoration, and gilt detailing.

The decanter is formed with a rounded body rising to a long, tapered neck, culminating in a tall spire stopper. The lower section is cut with diamond and cross-hatched patterns, creating a prismatic effect that contrasts with the smoother upper register. These cut areas reveal the underlying clarity of the glass, interacting with light in a way that emphasizes both depth and structure.

Above the cut body, the surface transitions into enameled decoration composed of floral cartouches and scrolling motifs, rendered in white, red, and green with raised detail. The enamel work is complemented by hand-applied gilding, which outlines and frames the composition while adding warmth and contrast to the cooler tones of the glass.

This type of glassware was produced in Bohemia (modern-day Czech Republic) and exported widely to Persia and the broader Middle Eastern market during the early to mid-20th century. These objects were often intended as decorative display pieces or prestige household items, valued for their craftsmanship and visual richness rather than purely utilitarian function.

Form and Material

The decanter is substantial in scale, standing at approximately 15.75 inches (40 cm) in height. The body is proportioned with a broad lower section and a narrower neck, creating a balanced vertical profile that is both stable and visually elongated.

The glass exhibits a rich amethyst tone with subtle variation depending on light, sometimes reading closer to ruby or deep plum. This variation is characteristic of cased or colored glass and contributes to the depth of the piece.

The stopper follows the same design language, extending the vertical line of the decanter and reinforcing its overall silhouette.

Decorative Program

The decorative scheme integrates European cutting techniques with Persian-influenced ornament. The diamond-cut lower body provides structure and brilliance, while the enameled floral elements introduce a softer, more organic layer.

The floral motifs echo traditional Persian decorative themes, often associated with stylized garden imagery. The use of gilding enhances these elements without overwhelming the composition, maintaining a balance between detail and restraint.

This combination of cutting, enamel, and gilding places the piece within a recognized category of Bohemian export glass made specifically for the Persian market.

Condition

The decanter is in good vintage condition consistent with age and use. The enamel decoration remains intact and well-defined, and the gilding retains much of its original presence with minor wear.

The glass body shows no cracks or structural damage. Minor surface wear is consistent with handling over time.

The stopper is present and fits properly.
