Description

Antique Cranberry Glass Decanter Victorian Cut Crystal w Stopper

A striking and authentically antique cranberry glass decanter, dating to the mid-19th century, distinguished by its rich coloration, hand-worked form, and exceptional craftsmanship. This is not a later decorative reproduction but a true Victorian piece, retaining the hallmarks of early glassmaking techniques and materials.

The decanter is formed in a classic period shape, with a faceted, slightly tapered body rising into a structured neck defined by applied ring details. The surfaces are wheel-cut into vertical panels, catching and refracting light with precision, while the overall silhouette reflects the refined proportions associated with early English and Bohemian glasshouses.

Its most captivating feature is the cranberry coloration, achieved through the historic addition of gold compounds to molten glass—a costly and technically demanding process. The result is a luminous pink-to-ruby tone, with natural variation in depth where the glass thickens, particularly visible toward the base.

The piece retains its original stopper, itself a work of craftsmanship. The clear stopper peg contains a suspended internal cranberry “flame” inclusion, where colored glass has been skillfully drawn into the clear body. This detail is not incidental—it is a deliberate and technically advanced feature, demonstrating the glassblower’s control and elevating the decanter beyond standard production examples. It also strongly supports that the stopper is original to the piece.

The base reveals a well-defined pontil mark, confirming hand-blown manufacture, along with extensive, consistent wear that can only develop over many decades of use. The absence of mold seams, along with subtle inclusions and natural irregularities in the glass, further reinforce its authenticity.

Pieces of this type are most commonly attributed to the Stourbridge glassmaking region of England, with leading makers including Thomas Webb & Sons, Stevens & Williams, and Richardson. While unsigned—as is typical for the period—the quality of the glass, the cutting, and especially the stopper detail suggest a high-quality workshop production.

Cranberry glass decanters from this period are increasingly sought after, particularly when retaining their original stoppers and showing strong indicators of early manufacture. The combination of color, form, and craftsmanship makes this both a functional object and a highly decorative display piece.
