Description

9.25″ Vintage Fenton Hobnail Milk Glass Bowl

This Fenton Hobnail bowl combines a deep rounded body with an exuberantly crimped rim, creating a distinctly sculptural example of Fenton’s celebrated white milk glass. Measuring approximately 9.25 inches across and 4.5 inches high, the bowl has substantial depth despite its relatively compact diameter.

Closely spaced hobnails cover the exterior, rising from the smooth circular foot toward the upper edge. Above them, the glass opens dramatically into a broad series of deeply folded and fluted sections. The smooth white interior provides a striking contrast to the highly textured exterior.

The combination of opaque white glass, repeating hobnails and freely shaped rim gives the bowl considerable visual movement. It works beautifully as a decorative centerpiece, serving bowl, fruit bowl or display piece.

Fenton Hobnail Milk Glass

The Fenton Art Glass Company became one of America’s best-known producers of decorative glass during the 20th century. Founded in 1905 by brothers Frank L. and John W. Fenton, the company developed an extraordinary variety of glass colors, surface treatments and decorative forms during its long history.

Hobnail became particularly associated with Fenton. Its characteristic surface consists of closely arranged raised bumps molded into the glass, producing both a strong pattern and a distinctive tactile quality.

White milk glass proved especially effective for these designs. Light and shadow emphasize the individual hobnails, while the opaque glass gives the elaborate contours of the hand-worked edges an almost sculptural appearance.

Deep Crimped Ruffled Rim

The proportions distinguish this bowl from broader, shallower Fenton centerpiece forms. Its sides rise relatively steeply from the circular foot before expanding outward into the elaborate rim.

Large alternating folds project around the perimeter, with smaller fluted ridges worked into each section. Viewed from above, they create a rhythmic flower-like outline around the smooth central well.

Because Fenton workers shaped these edges while the glass remained workable, the crimped rim adds an expressive hand-finished element to the regular molded Hobnail surface below.

Dating This Fenton Hobnail Bowl

This bowl does not carry a molded Fenton signature that we can identify. Earlier Fenton glass commonly carried removable paper or foil labels, many of which disappeared through years of handling and washing.

Based on its Hobnail pattern, construction, white milk glass, form and lack of a molded signature, we believe this bowl is a mid-20th-century Fenton example, probably produced before 1970. Without an original label or documented early purchase history, we prefer this broader dating rather than assigning it to a specific decade.

Condition

The bowl remains in very good vintage condition. The photographs provide detailed views of the interior, exterior, elaborate crimped rim and underside.

As with any vintage glass object of this age, minor surface wear consistent with previous use may be present. Please examine the photographs carefully, particularly the numerous folds and projecting points around the rim, as they form an important part of the condition description.

Collecting Interest

At approximately 9.25 inches across but 4.5 inches high, this Fenton bowl has a notably deep profile. Its proportions give it a different character from the larger, more broadly spreading Hobnail centerpiece bowls.

The white glass also makes the piece remarkably versatile. Its highly textured exterior and dramatic ruffled edge provide enough visual interest for standalone display, while its neutral color allows it to complement traditional, mid-century and contemporary interiors.

For collectors of Fenton, American art glass and vintage milk glass, the bowl offers an attractive combination of the classic Hobnail surface with an especially expressive crimped form.

Authenticity

We attribute this bowl to Fenton Art Glass Company based on its Hobnail pattern, white milk glass, construction, proportions and close comparison with known Fenton examples of the same form and dimensions.

The piece is unmarked and no original Fenton label survives. We therefore identify it through comparison with documented Fenton forms rather than representing it as a signed or labeled example.
