Description
Antique Second Empire Gilt Bronze & Brass Tripod Vase Stand
Caryatid legs · Lion paw feet · Pierced anthemion finials · Acanthus frieze rim
A finely detailed 19th century Second Empire gilt tripod vase stand, executed in gilt bronze and brass, and designed in the enduring neoclassical taste associated with the French decorative arts of the Napoleon III period, circa 1850–1880.
The form derives from the classical athénienne, a tripod support for a bowl or vessel inspired by ancient Roman and Pompeian prototypes and later formalized in the interiors of the First Empire. During the mid-19th century, these models were widely reinterpreted by European workshops, combining classical motifs with refined casting and assembly techniques.
The stand is supported by three cast gilt bronze caryatid figures, each depicted as a draped classical female form with carefully modeled facial features and stylized hair. The figures transition into squared shafts and terminate in lion-paw feet, a defining motif of Empire design and one of its most recognizable ornamental elements.
The circular rim is formed in gilt brass and decorated with a continuous acanthus leaf and berry frieze, crisply defined and evenly spaced. Rising from the rim at intervals are three pierced anthemion (palmette) finials, mounted on small brackets and providing vertical articulation to the otherwise horizontal form. The contrast between the heavier cast bronze legs and the lighter, shaped brass elements reflects typical 19th century workshop construction, where components were produced separately and assembled into the finished object.
The use of small machine-cut screws for attachment is consistent with mid to late 19th century manufacture, supporting attribution to the Second Empire or closely related period rather than earlier First Empire production.
Originally intended to support a glass, porcelain, or stone bowl, the stand retains strong visual presence as a standalone sculptural object, equally suited to display in neoclassical, Regency, or eclectic interiors.
