Description

Elizabeth Arden Treasures of the Pharaohs Papyrus Candle Jar Red Candle Egypt

This vintage Elizabeth Arden “Treasures of the Pharaohs” papyrus candle jar reflects the glamorous Egyptian Revival aesthetic that became especially popular during the late 20th century. Produced in Japan exclusively for Elizabeth Arden, the piece originally housed a scented candle and remains complete with its original unused red candle insert.

The sculptural porcelain form is inspired by stylized papyrus blossoms and lotus-inspired Egyptian floral motifs. Raised petal forms surround the body and lid, while vivid enamel decoration in cobalt blue, turquoise, coral red, green, and gold creates a striking contrast against the glossy white porcelain body.

Compact in scale but visually dramatic, the jar functions beautifully as a vanity accessory, decorative collectible, or Egyptian Revival accent piece.

Egyptian Revival Inspiration and Papyrus Symbolism

The “Treasures of the Pharaohs” series was created during a renewed fascination with ancient Egyptian art, architecture, and symbolism. Elizabeth Arden translated those influences into collectible decorative fragrance objects intended to elevate vanity and dressing table presentation.

In ancient Egypt, papyrus symbolized life, renewal, fertility, and Lower Egypt itself. Papyrus columns and floral forms appeared throughout temple architecture, painted decoration, jewelry, and ceremonial objects. The stylized floral ornament on this piece echoes those historical themes while presenting them through a sophisticated late 20th century decorative design language.

Its combination of sculptural porcelain and jewel-toned geometric ornament gives the piece both an Art Deco and Egyptian Revival character.

Decorative Appeal and Collectibility

Unlike ordinary fragrance packaging, these porcelain containers were intentionally designed as lasting decorative objects. Many were kept and displayed long after the original contents were gone, making surviving examples with intact unused candles increasingly desirable to collectors.

This example retains its original red candle insert. While the candle surface shows slight softening or melting from age and temperature exposure, the wick remains unused and the candle itself was never burned.

The porcelain body, enamel decoration, and gilding remain particularly well preserved, giving the piece strong visual impact for display either individually or grouped with other Egyptian Revival collectibles.

Condition

Excellent vintage condition overall. The original red candle remains intact and unused, with only minor surface softening from age or temperature exposure. The wick is unused. Porcelain, enamel decoration, and gilding remain bright and well preserved with minimal wear consistent with careful storage. Please review photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
