Vintage Coalport Hong Kong Ginger Jar – Old Backstamp, Rust Floral, Bone China England

This elegant vintage Coalport “Hong Kong” ginger jar captures the refined beauty and craftsmanship of English bone china from the 1970s. With its rich iron-red (rust) floral decoration, delicate birds, and finely detailed gilt accents, it reflects a classic interpretation of traditional Imari-inspired design.

Flowing branches, blossoms, and birds wrap around the form, creating movement and visual interest from every angle. At the same time, the soft ivory ground provides a clean backdrop, so the decoration stands out with clarity and balance. The composition feels both lively and controlled, which gives the piece a timeless decorative presence.

Coalport, established in 1750, built its reputation on producing some of England’s finest porcelain. Over time, the company became known for combining traditional influences with high-quality bone china. The “Hong Kong” pattern remains one of its most recognizable designs, admired for its East Asian inspiration and detailed, hand-finished appearance.

This example features the earlier “old backstamp” version, which collectors often prefer. You can identify it by the rust-colored floral palette and the traditional Coalport crown mark. The underside reads “Bone China,” “Made in England,” “Est. 1750,” and “Hong Kong,” confirming its origin and period. Because later versions used a different color palette and updated markings, this earlier version tends to feel more classic and is often harder to find.

The ginger jar includes its original lid, which mirrors the same floral decoration and completes the overall form. Its proportions make it easy to place on a shelf, in a cabinet, or as part of a larger decorative grouping. It works equally well as a standalone accent or paired with other fine china pieces.

Condition is very good vintage, with light, age-appropriate wear. The glaze remains glossy, the colors are vibrant, and the gilt detailing continues to catch the light beautifully.
