Description

Vintage Persian Miniature Mother of Pearl Pendant Necklace Silver Frame Tehran Iran 1978

This vintage Persian pendant combines several traditional Iranian decorative arts into a single wearable work of art. Purchased in Tehran, Iran in 1978 and carefully preserved since, it features a hand-painted miniature equestrian scene executed on natural mother of pearl and mounted within an ornate silver frame suspended from its original chain.

The pendant immediately captures attention through the luminous surface of the mother of pearl. Unlike a painted canvas or paper miniature, the iridescent shell creates a constantly changing background beneath the artwork. As light moves across the surface, subtle flashes of cream, gold, pink, and pearl tones emerge through the painting, giving the composition a depth that photographs cannot fully capture.

The scene depicts mounted horsemen in colorful attire gathered around a tented encampment, rendered in the style of traditional Persian miniature painting. Equestrian themes have long occupied an important place in Persian art, literature, and court culture, appearing in manuscripts, palace decoration, and illustrated epics. The composition evokes the world of royal hunts, military exercises, polo matches, and courtly gatherings that became enduring subjects for Persian artists over many centuries.

Persian Miniature Painting Tradition

Persian miniature painting represents one of Iran’s most celebrated artistic traditions. Characterized by delicate brushwork, vivid colors, and carefully balanced compositions, these paintings often illustrated scenes from history, literature, and daily life. Horsemen, nobles, hunting parties, and encampments were recurring themes that symbolized skill, courage, and aristocratic culture.

This pendant translates that artistic heritage into a wearable format. Despite its relatively small scale, the artist successfully captured movement and narrative through the positioning of the riders, their colorful garments, and the surrounding landscape.

Natural Mother of Pearl

The painting is executed directly onto a polished mother-of-pearl plaque. The natural nacre remains visible beneath portions of the artwork and is fully evident on the reverse. Its iridescent qualities create a subtle shimmer that changes with viewing angle and lighting conditions.

Mother of pearl has long been prized throughout the Middle East and Asia for both decorative and luxury objects. Its use here provides a distinctive foundation that enhances the miniature painting while emphasizing the handcrafted nature of the piece.

Silver Frame and Original Chain

Surrounding the miniature is an attractive silver frame composed of repeating floral and rosette motifs that create a decorative border around the artwork. The pendant retains its original chain, purchased together with the piece in Tehran in 1978.

The silver currently displays a natural aged patina consistent with vintage condition. While it could likely be polished to a brighter finish, it is being offered in its present state, preserving the appearance it has acquired over decades of careful storage.

Provenance and Condition

This pendant was acquired in Tehran, Iran in 1978 and has remained in the same family collection since purchase. It was never regularly worn and was primarily preserved as part of a personal collection of Persian decorative arts.

The mother of pearl remains intact and displays beautiful natural iridescence. The hand-painted scene remains clearly visible with expected minor age-related wear consistent with a vintage handcrafted object. The silver frame and chain exhibit natural oxidation and patina. No signature or maker’s mark has been identified.

An appealing example of late Pahlavi-era Iranian craftsmanship that combines miniature painting, jewelry design, and natural materials into a distinctive decorative object.
