Description
Wedgwood Egyptian Collection Primrose Jasper Cachepot with Terracotta Reliefs 1977
This Wedgwood Egyptian Collection cachepot in primrose jasper with terracotta relief decoration reflects the restrained neoclassical side of the celebrated 1970s Egyptian revival series. The soft primrose ground contrasts beautifully against the warm terracotta ornament, creating a refined architectural appearance rather than the heavier gilded look often associated with Egyptian revival objects.
The decoration features alternating Egyptian-inspired motifs in relief, including stylized palm forms, sacred emblems, and a crocodile beneath a ceremonial vessel. The repeating arrangement wraps continuously around the cylindrical form, giving the piece rhythm and symmetry while allowing each motif to remain clearly defined against the matte jasper surface.
Produced in 1977, this example belongs to the earliest period of the Wedgwood Egyptian Collection. The collection is documented within the original Wedgwood Egyptian Collection brochure (1978), which outlines the materials, iconography, and design direction of the series. Like other terracotta relief examples from the collection, this piece belongs to the jasperware group rather than the black basalt gilt wares.
Wedgwood and Egyptian Revival Design
Wedgwood had a long history of adapting classical and archaeological themes into decorative art, dating back to the 18th century. The Egyptian Collection continued that tradition during a renewed period of fascination with ancient Egypt inspired by museum exhibitions, archaeological discoveries, and enduring public interest in Tutankhamun and dynastic imagery.
Rather than reproducing ancient objects directly, Wedgwood interpreted Egyptian forms through its own neoclassical design language. The matte jasper body and applied relief decoration create a sculptural effect that recalls carved stone or architectural friezes more than conventional ceramics.
The primrose jasper body used here gives the piece a softer and more unusual appearance than the darker black jasper and basalt examples from the series. Combined with the terracotta reliefs, it creates a warm palette strongly associated with Wedgwood’s late 1970s Egyptian production.
Condition
Good vintage condition overall. The relief decoration remains well preserved with strong detail visible throughout the motifs. No major chips, cracks, or restoration were observed. The underside retains the impressed Wedgwood mark, Made in England, and 77 date mark. There is residual adhesive or old felt residue to the underside center, as photographed.
