Description

Vintage Royal Crown Derby Posies Spoon with Hairline

This Royal Crown Derby Posies Spoon was purchased in 1973 and has never been used. The small serving spoon combines a polished metal bowl with a decorated bone china handle featuring the colorful flowers of Royal Crown Derby’s Derby Posies pattern.

At approximately 5 1/8 inches long, the spoon has the compact proportions of a specialized table or serving accessory. Its porcelain handle turns the practical utensil into an attractive decorative object that could coordinate with Derby Posies china and other Royal Crown Derby table accessories.

Colorful Derby Posies Decoration

The Derby Posies decoration is particularly attractive on this small handle. Roses and other garden flowers appear in pink, white, red, yellow and blue, surrounded by softly painted green foliage and delicate stems.

The decoration extends along both sides of the bone china handle, with variations in the floral arrangements. One side includes a prominent group of roses and blue flowers, while the reverse presents another arrangement of blossoms. This gives the small utensil considerable decorative interest when viewed from different angles.

Derby Posies became known for this informal mixture of garden flowers. Rather than imposing a rigid border or symmetrical composition, the pattern creates the impression of small bouquets scattered naturally across white bone china.

Royal Crown Derby Bone China Handled Cutlery

Royal Crown Derby described this category of table accessories as bone china handled cutlery. The company combined decorated bone china handles with functional metal components, allowing familiar Royal Crown Derby patterns to extend beyond conventional dinner and tea services.

This spoon illustrates that approach on a particularly intimate scale. The reflective metal bowl and stem contrast with the softly colored porcelain, while the tapering handle provides enough surface for a surprisingly elaborate floral composition.

These discontinued utensils also document a period when fine china manufacturers produced specialized accessories to complement coordinated table settings. Today, they offer collectors forms that differ considerably from the plates, cups and serving dishes more commonly associated with Royal Crown Derby.

Unused Since 1973

This spoon was purchased in 1973 and has remained unused. The polished metal portion presents well, while the Derby Posies decoration retains its color and detail after more than five decades.

The bone china handle has developed a fine hairline despite the spoon never having been used. The line is visible in the photographs and appears to remain closed, without separation or missing porcelain. It should not be confused with a chip or complete break.

The unused history is significant because it demonstrates that the hairline did not result from ordinary wear at the table. Vintage utensils that combine rigid bone china with fitted metal components can develop age-related stresses during long periods of storage.

Because a hairline is present, the asking price reflects the condition of the bone china handle.

Period Royal Crown Derby Presentation Box

The spoon comes with a period Royal Crown Derby presentation box, adding useful context to this 1973 example. The fitted packaging also provides an appropriate way to store the delicate bone china handled utensil.

Its survival with the box is particularly interesting given the spoon’s unused history. Together, the utensil and period packaging illustrate how these decorative Royal Crown Derby accessories were originally presented and preserved.

A Collectible Derby Posies Spoon

The small scale, colorful floral decoration and combination of porcelain with polished metal make this spoon an appealing example of Royal Crown Derby’s discontinued bone china handled accessories. Its known 1973 purchase date further establishes its place within the company’s twentieth-century production.

Although the hairline prevents this example from being considered perfect, the spoon remains complete, unused and visually attractive. For collectors of Derby Posies, vintage Royal Crown Derby or unusual English bone china accessories, it offers an interesting period piece at a price that takes its condition into account.
