Description
Monumental Persian Isfahan Ghalamzani Tabletop 39” Hand-Engraved Mid 20th Century
This monumental Persian Ghalamzani tabletop from Isfahan is an extraordinary example of mid-20th century Iranian metalwork at a scale and level of refinement rarely encountered today. Measuring an impressive 39 inches (99 cm) in diameter, the piece was acquired in Isfahan and has remained in the same family collection since the mid-20th century.
Far more than a decorative tray, this was conceived as a prestige tabletop intended for display within an important interior. The sheer scale alone required an enormous amount of labor, but what truly distinguishes the piece is the exceptional quality of the engraving. Every surface is densely worked with intricate arabesques, scrolling foliage, floral motifs, palmettes, and radiating geometric forms executed with remarkable precision and consistency.
The composition centers around a spectacular starburst medallion that expands outward through layered bands of Safavid-inspired ornamentation. Close examination reveals extraordinary detail throughout the engraving, including deeply textured backgrounds, delicate floral scrollwork, and highly disciplined symmetry across the entire surface. Even the outer border maintains the same refinement and density found within the central field, a strong indication of master-level workmanship rather than commercial workshop production.
The silver-toned surface probably consists of tinned or silvered metal over a copper-alloy base, a traditional technique frequently associated with high-quality Isfahan metalwork. Areas of natural tonal variation and age-related surface character enhance the visual depth of the engraved decoration while supporting the authenticity of the piece. The reverse retains original workshop and finishing marks consistent with genuine hand-crafted Persian metalwork.
The Art of Persian Ghalamzani
Ghalamzani, also spelled Qalamzani, is the ancient Persian art of hand engraving metal using specialized chisels and small hammers. Centered primarily in Isfahan, the tradition flourished under the Safavid dynasty and became one of the defining artistic expressions of Persian decorative arts.
Creating a tabletop of this size required immense technical skill. The artisan first prepared the metal surface before gradually carving the design by hand line by line, section by section. The darker recessed areas visible throughout the tray were traditionally created by filling the engraved lines with dark compounds to heighten contrast and reveal the complexity of the pattern.
Large-format examples of this caliber are increasingly difficult to find today, especially pieces retaining this level of detail and visual harmony across such an expansive surface.
A Statement Piece for Interior Design and Collection
With its commanding scale and museum-quality visual presence, this tabletop functions equally well as:
- A monumental wall display
- A luxury coffee or center table surface
- A focal point in Moorish, Persian, Mediterranean, or maximalist interiors
- A major piece within a collection of Islamic or Middle Eastern decorative arts
The interplay between the luminous silver surface and the dark engraved grounds creates dramatic visual depth that changes beautifully with light.
Condition
Excellent vintage condition consistent with age and handcrafted production. This monumental tabletop has remained in the same family collection since its acquisition in Isfahan during the 1960s and was primarily displayed rather than used as functional furniture.
The engraved surface remains exceptionally crisp and detailed with strong contrast throughout the decoration. Minor tonal variations, oxidation, and surface irregularities are consistent with traditional hand-crafted Persian metalwork and age. The reverse retains original workshop finishing marks and light age-related patina with minimal handling wear.
