Description

Saji Fine China Japanese Imari Porcelain Bowl with Chrysanthemum Decoration – Mid-Century Export Ware

This Saji Fine China Japanese porcelain bowl features an elaborate Imari pattern composition executed in iron red, cobalt blue, white, green, and gold. With its wide shallow form and richly layered decoration, the bowl combines strong decorative presence with the refined visual language associated with mid-century Japanese export porcelain.

The interior centers around a chrysanthemum arrangement framed within a scalloped reserve, surrounded by alternating geometric and floral panels that radiate outward across the bowl. Deep cobalt reserves filled with scrolling gilt ornament create contrast against lighter patterned sections decorated with blossoms, foliage, and stylized floral forms. The broad iron-red border frames the composition and gives the bowl a warm, dramatic presence both on display and in use.

Like the matching 12-inch plate from the same decorative line, this bowl reflects the enduring popularity of Imari porcelain traditions within Japanese export ceramics during the mid-20th century. The layered decoration, segmented reserves, chrysanthemum motifs, and richly colored palette all connect the piece to the broader history of Imari porcelain while also reflecting the decorative tastes of the postwar export market.

The underside carries the same crown-and-ribbon SAJI Fine China mark with “Made in Japan,” confirming its origin and association with the matching plate. Together, the two pieces create an elegant coordinated display while still functioning beautifully as individual decorative forms.

The Enduring Appeal of Imari Porcelain

Imari porcelain became internationally recognized for its vivid use of cobalt blue, iron red, gold, and densely layered ornament. Originally associated with porcelain exported through the Japanese port of Imari, the term gradually evolved into a broader decorative tradition admired throughout Europe and North America for centuries.

This bowl demonstrates many of those classic characteristics. The alternating reserves create movement and structure, while the floral decoration softens the geometry and gives the composition warmth and balance. Chrysanthemums appear prominently throughout the design, reinforcing one of the most enduring motifs within Japanese decorative arts.

The shallow bowl form also allows the decoration to be appreciated as a complete composition from above, making it particularly effective for cabinet display, dining presentation, or decorative interior use.

Color, Decoration, and Presentation

One of the most attractive qualities of this bowl is the way the cobalt and iron-red sections frame the lighter floral reserves. The contrast gives the piece depth and visual rhythm while allowing the gilt decoration to catch light across the surface.

The scalloped central reserve softens the composition and draws attention toward the chrysanthemum arrangement at the center of the bowl. Around it, geometric lattice panels and floral reserves alternate in a carefully balanced arrangement that feels decorative without becoming visually rigid.

The porcelain body remains smooth and refined, consistent with Japanese export porcelain of the period. The bowl retains a strong decorative presence whether displayed independently or alongside matching pieces from the same line.

Condition

The bowl is in good vintage condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs observed. The porcelain body remains structurally sound and the overall presentation remains strong.

There is localized wear and loss to some of the decorative detailing along part of the exterior side decoration, visible in the photographs. This appears primarily confined to small areas of surface ornament rather than structural damage and does not significantly detract from the visual impact of the piece overall.

Color and gilt decoration across the main interior design remain vibrant and well preserved.
