Description

Wedgwood Egyptian Collection Tutankhamun Gilt Black Basalt Plaque 7cm

This Wedgwood Egyptian Collection basalt plaque features a finely detailed gilt profile portrait of Tutankhamun rendered against a matte black basalt ground. At approximately 7 cm in diameter, the plaque has a stronger visual presence than the smaller miniature examples from the series, allowing the sculptural detail and rich gold decoration to stand out dramatically against the deep black surface.

Produced during the height of the Egyptian Revival movement of the late 1970s, the plaque reflects Wedgwood’s renewed exploration of ancient Egyptian imagery inspired by the international fascination surrounding the Tutankhamun exhibitions of the era.

The portrait captures the iconic profile associated with ancient Egyptian wall reliefs and ceremonial art, including the stylized cobra ornament, elaborate headdress, and detailed collar decoration. The contrast between the luminous gilt decoration and dense matte basalt gives the piece an elegant neoclassical character while preserving its archaeological inspiration.

Wedgwood Black Basalt and Egyptian Revival Design

Wedgwood black basalt is one of the company’s most celebrated ceramic bodies, originally developed by Josiah Wedgwood in the 18th century. Unlike glazed ceramics, basalt ware is admired for its smooth matte surface and sculptural qualities, making it particularly suited to classical and archaeological-inspired decoration.

During the late 1970s, Wedgwood introduced a series of Egyptian-inspired decorative objects incorporating pharaonic portraits, falcons, scarabs, lotus motifs, and other imagery associated with ancient Egypt. Gilt decoration on black basalt became one of the defining visual characteristics of many pieces within the Egyptian Collection.

The use of gold against black creates a striking visual effect reminiscent of ancient funerary objects and ceremonial ornament while also reflecting Wedgwood’s longstanding neoclassical design tradition.

Design and Collectibility

The plaque combines refined Wedgwood craftsmanship with the enduring visual power of Egyptian profile portraiture. Because of its medium scale, it works well both as a standalone decorative object and grouped with other plaques or Egyptian Revival ceramics.

Collectors are often drawn to the Egyptian Collection for its combination of archaeological themes, strong graphic contrast, and limited production period during the late 1970s Egyptian Revival movement.

The reverse carries the impressed Wedgwood Made in England mark. No visible date mark was observed on this example.

Condition

Good vintage condition with light age-related wear consistent with careful storage and handling. The gilt decoration remains well preserved with minor wear consistent with age. No major chips or cracks observed. Please review photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
