Description
Set of 12 Mizuko Japan Imari Porcelain Plates with Chrysanthemum Decoration – Mid-Century Japanese Export Ware
This set of twelve Mizuko Japan porcelain plates features a richly detailed Imari pattern decorated in cobalt blue, iron red, soft green, and gilt accents. While closely related in decorative language to other mid-century Japanese export Imari wares, these plates display their own distinct palette and character, placing greater visual emphasis on green geometric reserves balanced against deep cobalt panels and warm floral decoration.
Each plate centers around a chrysanthemum arrangement framed within a scalloped reserve, surrounded by alternating patterned sections filled with floral ornament, geometric lattice work, and scrolling decoration. The combination of blue, red, green, and gold creates a layered surface that feels both structured and lively, while the repeating segmented design gives the set a strong visual rhythm when displayed together.
The underside carries the Mizuko Japan mark, identifying the set as Japanese export porcelain produced during the mid-20th century. Like many Japanese porcelain makers of the period, Mizuko worked within the long tradition of Imari decoration, drawing from the bold color contrasts and ornamental compositions that made Imari porcelain internationally admired for centuries.
Unlike the larger Saji bowl and charger previously listed, these plates lean less heavily on iron-red borders and instead allow the green geometric reserves to play a more prominent decorative role. That shift gives the set a lighter visual balance while still preserving the dramatic contrast associated with traditional Imari palettes.
The Enduring Popularity of Imari Decoration
Imari porcelain became one of the most recognizable decorative traditions in export ceramics because of its vivid color combinations and richly layered ornamentation. Japanese potters combined cobalt blue, iron red, gold, and floral motifs into compositions that immediately stood apart from European ceramics of the same period.
These plates reflect that continuing tradition through their segmented panel layout, chrysanthemum motifs, and elaborate decorative layering. The geometric reserves create structure and symmetry, while the floral sections soften the composition with organic movement and detail.
Because the set includes twelve matching plates, the overall presentation becomes especially impressive when arranged together. The repeated cobalt and green reserves create visual continuity across the stack while the gilt detailing catches light throughout the surfaces.
Color and Decorative Character
One of the most attractive qualities of this set is the balance between strong ornamentation and controlled composition. The cobalt reserves anchor the design visually, while the green lattice sections brighten the overall palette and introduce contrast against the warmer floral elements.
The central chrysanthemum decoration provides a softer focal point surrounded by repeating floral and geometric forms that radiate outward across the plate. Gold detailing enhances the layered surfaces without overwhelming the porcelain body itself.
The result feels decorative and richly detailed while still remaining elegant enough for display, cabinet presentation, or table use.
Condition
The set is in good vintage condition overall. The porcelain bodies remain structurally sound with strong color and decorative presentation across the group.
As expected with vintage porcelain sets of this age, there may be light signs of handling and stacking wear consistent with age and use, but no major damage was observed during inspection.
The overall visual presentation remains vibrant and highly decorative.
