Description
Vintage Petit Point Pocket Mirror
This vintage petit point pocket mirror combines finely worked floral embroidery with an ornate gilt-metal frame and a small integral handle. Purchased in Vienna in 1967, it survives in particularly attractive condition and offers a charming example of the embroidered personal accessories fashionable during the mid-20th century.
The circular embroidered panel forms the decorative back of the mirror. Roses and smaller blossoms create a colorful central bouquet, surrounded by additional flowers, foliage and scrolling ornament. Rather than relying on large blocks of color, the embroiderer used numerous small stitches and carefully varied shades to model the individual flowers.
Floral Petit Point Embroidery
The embroidery remains one of the strongest features of this vintage petit point pocket mirror. Pink and red roses dominate the composition, while blue and purple flowers, green foliage and smaller accents create a remarkably detailed garden within an area measuring less than three inches across.
A pale ground makes the individual colors particularly visible. Around the perimeter, scrolling brown and gold-toned forms create a decorative border that visually connects the needlework with the elaborate metal surround.
The petit point remains intact and well preserved. Its condition allows the stitchwork and subtle color changes to remain clearly visible even at close range.
An Ornate Gilt-Metal Frame
An elaborate gilt-metal frame surrounds the embroidered panel and mirror. Molded and chased-looking foliate decoration follows the circular edge, while the small handle continues the ornamental treatment with angular and leaf-like details.
The gilded surface has mellowed slightly with age and shows areas of lightening. Because the piece carries no metal marks and the underlying metal has not been identified, it is described conservatively as gilt metal rather than ormolu or gilded bronze.
On the opposite side, the original circular mirror remains remarkably usable. A small speck or spot is visible on the glass, but there is no extensive deterioration to obscure the reflection.
Purchased in Vienna in 1967
The mirror was purchased in Vienna, Austria, in 1967. This documented history is especially interesting because Vienna had a long-established tradition of producing exceptionally fine petit point accessories, including purses, cases, compacts and other small personal objects.
However, the mirror itself is unmarked. Its Vienna provenance therefore documents where it was purchased rather than establishing its place of manufacture. European makers produced related petit point accessories in several countries during this period, and an unmarked object should not be assigned an Austrian origin solely from its floral design.
This distinction makes the mirror an interesting example of the international market for petit point during the postwar period, when traditional European needlework continued to appear on fashionable personal accessories.
A Miniature Decorative Art
Petit point proved particularly well suited to objects of this scale. By working across a fine ground, an embroiderer could compress roses, leaves, scrolls and subtle shading into an extraordinarily small space. From normal viewing distance the individual stitches recede, allowing the composition to read almost like a miniature floral painting.
This vintage petit point pocket mirror retains that effect particularly well. Its combination of detailed needlework, decorative gilt metal and practical function captures the appeal that made petit point accessories popular souvenirs and personal luxury objects during the 20th century.
